Ivory Lotus Pod Netsuke

A finely detailed, carved Ivory Netsuke of a Lotus Pod, decorated with bats. In the  Japanese culture, the Lotus flower symbolizes life, strength, and purity of heart, soul, and mind, while the bat is a symbol of happiness and long life. When the piece is hanging down on the cord, the seed pods protrude, adding a new element to the netsuke’s beauty. Instead of the usual two-hole ‘Himotoshi’ application, the cord here would be passed through the stem at the base of the pod, as Himotoshi would detract from the aesthetic of the carving. The detailing is wonderful and very fine. Age: Early 1900. Dimensions: 1-1/8″ h x 1-1/8″ dia.
