Sosaku Kokeshi Entitled “Kogarashi – Chilly North Wind” by Shido Shouzan

The Sosaku style Kokeshi dolls literally means “Creative Creations” and they are a type of wooden doll made by turning on a lathe. Sosaku craftsman express a certain theme through the creation of their dolls. This wonderful Kokeshi is the snow coat style in which her clothing is in black, with her contrasting natural color face and reddish-brown muffler which is the focal point of this piece entitled: “Kogarashi – Chilly North Wind.”

Shouzan was born in Ohita Prefecture of Japan; he had received the most prestigious highly coveted Prime Minister Award in 1962. The piece is not signed and marked on the bottom “Made in Japan”. Showing minor ware for its age which, we estimate around early 1960’s.
