Vintage Japanese Bizen-yaki DARUMA Statue | Zen Patriarch Buddhist Monk

Offered is an interpretation of the Zen Patriarch Daruma, standing in greetings with hands in a hidden energy-flowing ‘mudra’ pose, his expression is sober and discerning in a formidable presence with stylized eyebrows, and large ears, and undoubtedly from the hands of an able artist. This particular piece utilized a casting method by pouring the clay melted muddily into the plaster mold. This can be seen in that the bottom is fully open and used for producing ornament figures as opposed to the hand method while kneading clay without using a potter's wheel. This impressive Bizen-yaki, Okimono is unglazed, its ironlike hardness and natural colors brown color with red undertones on the silken surface are the direct results of the high temperatures of the kiln. He has a well-defined cloak, (cowl) that shows motion as if blowing in the wind. His feet are smoothed and undefined. The piece is unsigned.

Condition: Excellent condition for the piece is perfect, with no chipping, missing elements, or color loss. It retains a beautiful finish, with its original craftsmanship preserved. Museum-quality: meeting the standards of the collector of the Japanese folk art genre.

NOTE: Daruma is regarded as the chief of the Six Patriarchs of Buddhism. He teaches that perfection must be sought inward through meditation rather than outward observances, rich in symbolism, and is regarded more as a talisman of good luck to the Japanese. Daruma is a symbol of perseverance and good luck.
