Antique Japanese Kutani Porcelain Figure of Bodhidharma

Sale price$45.00

Dimensions: 1-3/4”h x 1-3/4”dia

This early 19th Japanese Kutani ceramic statue represents a seated figure of Daruma - the founder of Zen Buddhism. He is enveloped in a monastic robe that has been sculpted to render a characteristic form to his body. This monk is the symbol representing restless dreaming, and meditation and the father of numerous types of martial arts.

Superb sculpting with an absolutely fascinating painting of his face, - contemplative eyes with white enamel, a wonderful depiction of his facial hair, and an excellently conveyed expression of thoughtful concentration. The figure has an unglazed face with eyes fully opened and eyes looking upward. The artist incorporated his definitive eyebrows and trademark facial hair with a focus on his crane-like eyebrows, and a large wide nose. The bottom of the piece shows a phonetically written signature that has a direct relationship between symbols and sounds executed prior to the further development of hiragana characters and the use of Kanji. It appears to be a Shoza-style mark, and the specific artist is not identified because we cannot translate the writing.

Condition: Mint meaning the piece is perfect. No chips, cracks, breaks, missing pieces, or restoration, and retains its original workmanship, details, and finish. The artifact meets all the standards of collectible Vintage Pottery and Traditional Folk Art.
