Japanese Bamboo Basket | Double-Walled Morikago | 20th Century
A charming antique Japanese, smoked bamboo, (susutake), fruit basket (morikago). Morikago were shallow baskets for the attractive arrangement of colorful fruits of the season, to be displayed in the Tokonoma during the practice of the Sencha or Tea Ceremony. The body is twill-plaited, (ajiro-ami), and is reinforced by double wall plaiting of the rim with supporting strips called Haritake. The handle is wrapped in bamboo strips fastened to the basket and each other using decorative wraps, (bo-maki). Approximate Age: 1900-1925.
