Su Wu, courtesy name, Su Ziging, came from Duling, and was a high minister who was known for his loyalty and sincerity. He was an attendant in his father’s military staff and was eventually appointed Leader of Court Gentlemen and entrusted with diplomatic missions.
In this large mud figure, Su Wu is poised with his Blue/Green glazed fan in his hand, which was considered an instrument of dandyism in Chinese culture. Nice facial features with white colored hair, beautifully detailing, framing his face. His robe is deeply glazed in a mottled green, with accents of yellow ochre. Under his robe he is wearing brown pants. His face and hands are unglazed. The final prominent feature is the lampshade which is made of bamboo and hand spun silk, (left natural), suggesting his hat, (douli). His brown glazed slippers peep out from under his robe. Su Wu’s steadfast loyalty to the Han was recounted in numerous songs, poems, plays, and various forms of folk art throughout Chinese history.
Condition: The figure is Excellent, with a little wearing on the delicately woven silk shade, which is original to the piece. No chips or missing elements, repairs, or crazing on the figure. The figurine is affixed to a wood stand with the use of a hand made locking device, and attached so that the figurine, is not devalued by the assembly, (base/post individually mounted to support the figure, lighting element and shade). The mud figure was made around 1920, and most likely incorporated into a lamp around 1950. Dimensions: Figure— 3-1/2”w x 10-0”h; Total lamp— 3-1/2”w x 19-0”h (8.8cm x 25.4cm — 8.8cm x 48.26cm).

Excellent Condition- In unused, or like-unused condition. No visual or structural or surface wear or damage shown. Pristine. As good as the day it was made.
Great Condition- Appears in slightly used condition but looks "Like New". Some minor wear, but retains the original craft/workmanship. May show minor wear, that does not affect the main design, or associated motif. No cracks, dents, chips or missing elements.
Good Condition- Minor wear which can be restored or repaired; may have surface flaws, like staining or soiling, confined to a small area. The flaw(s) are counterbalanced by another feature, like brilliant color or innovative design. Some fading or the piece may have been altered in some fashion.
Fair Condition- Main aesthetic/design showing damage. Excessive noticeable wear or damage. Worth buying if can be restored/repaired because of its aesthetic or design appeal or rarity. Note: wear/damage consistent with age/use can often enhance the 'Antique' qualities of a piece, giving it a desirable second chance in one's collection
