Chinese Ivory Picture Frame

Antique Chinese Miniature Ivory Oval Picture Frame | Meiji era

Age:1880 -1900

Descriptive qualities& condition:

Dimensions: 2-7/8”h x 2-1/4”w x 1/4”d

Offered is an ovoid frame and made from deeply carved old ivory. It depicts one dragon amongst elaborate clouds again in relief around the frame with a plain oval cartouche and finial on the top and an un-ornamented inner band. The dragon has inlaid eyes. It has a thin ivory back and brass keepers with intricately shaped ivory easel back, with hinges with operable hinges.

Condition: Remarkably good and gentle wear, "as is" with no restoration. The frame shows three hairline cracks that only extend through the inner band and does not interfere with the stability or integrity/functionality of the frame itself. It appears to be missing a two ball feet on the bottom of the frame that does not interfere with its ability to stand correctly.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTA special Thanks to preservation efforts, animals and endangered materials (e.g. ivory and rare woods) are conservatively used today, if not banned altogether. However, we recognize that these materials have been important since ancient times for making a wide range of functional and decorative items. We only feature antique ivory and rare tree species because, while we support conservation, we truly feel that the experience and appreciation of historic artifacts should also be preserved.
