A quietly sophisticated and upright, one-piece bamboo Ikebana Flower Container is complete with its copper water liner. This container was meant to be used for formal ikebana arrangements in which the longstanding relationship between the container and flowers was essential in enhancing the atmosphere. When an artist creates a flower container, he or she does not necessarily expect that it will be used to hold flowers. However, in this case, this piece was made specifically to feature a unique and unusual ‘Nageirebana’ style arrangement, (the style of arranging that stresses fresh and spontaneous designs adhering only loosely to the classical principles of triangular structure and color harmony), supporting the functionality and relevance of Ikebana to the container.
The piece is made from one piece of bamboo that is symmetrical and has a flared open at the top to accommodate a tall arrangement and provides decorative handles and a fashioned crossbar to frame the arrangement. This bamboo culm was cut, carved, sanded, and grooved with a vertical pattern into a shape that highlights the qualities of its natural form. The piece is finished with ‘urushi’ clear lacquer and polished to reveal layers of color hidden underneath. The piece is unsigned, but upon purchase at a Tokyo gallery in 1998 we were told it was attributed to Fujinuma Noboru, and if so was created before his creations matured into a very modern and abstract aesthetic of similar tall bamboo containers.
NOTE: Due to the delicacy of this piece, and its size it will probably need customized packing and additional shipping beyond what is shown at checkout. I can place the piece on HOLD until I can confirm any additional cost in shipping for which you can email me through the site to do so.
Condition: Excellent and beautiful condition affording the container an age-old elegance. Beautiful patina and meets all the standards of Japanese Mingei collectibles.
