Offered is a powerfully modeled and superb cast bronze Okimono of a writhing Dragon with tendrils, from his head and protrusions in the form of spines running down its back. In terms of the detailing of this dragon, it has three toes on each foot and more serpent-like than other Asian interpretations. The bronze is heavily cast and finished in exquisite detail for a menacing effect, the outer top and bottom surfaces are finely detailed. This dragon has an original large, almost clear rock crystal sphere that rests on a perfectly formed cup, concave in shape to safely hold the crystal upon his back. Rock crystal spheres are highly revered in Asia and give this bronze casting a unique charm as an object in its own right, with a flowing shape that catches the eye. The piece is unsigned but all details indicate that it was created by a Japanese master craftsman.
Japanese dragons, believed to be mythological creatures were known to be unique in a sense since they served as water Gods ruling the oceans, shape-shifted into humans, and fought with other Gods. Dragons were believed to signify success, strength, wisdom, prosperity, and longevity. Japanese dragons are portrayed as malevolent beasts and often make use of dragons to make scenarios that put more focus on heroic acts and forecasting the future. The dragon corresponds to the spring season, with the water realm, and is said to control rain, which is the symbol of the Emperor’s power. Finally, there are different dragons in Japanese mythology and portrayed in art, architecture, and theatre.
