Antique Japanese Tokoname Ware Bodhidharma | Seated Daruma Okimono

An absolutely stunning vintage Buddhist Tokoname sculpture depicting Bodhidharma, the Buddhist disciple of Zen Buddhism, depicting the religious leader seated with hands under his garment in a “mudra” meditation pose. His facial details including his large hand-painted, definitive eyes and eyebrows that are wonderfully executed and very expressive. His mouth is also extremely expressive with an indication of facial hair, chubby cheeks, with an ear loop in each large and exaggerated ears. This beautifully mold poured and hand-finished figure is dressed in his red-rust cloak, (cowl) partially covered head, and wonderful folds throughout the garment. His one detailed toes sticking out from under his cloak exhibiting a rich pictorial ornament executed in lively, intense lines, with characteristic Tokoname reddish red rust/brown color. The pieces was purchased from an antique dealer in 1980 in Nagoya, and has its generic paper stamped affixed to the bottom.
Condition: Excellent condition meaning that the piece has minor flaws, but essentially perfect, with no chipping, missing elements or color loss. It retains a beautiful finish, with its original craftsmanship preserved. Museum-quality: meeting the standards of the collector of the Japanese folk art genre.
