This is the Year of the Water Rabbit for which zodiac animals have been embraced by the Japanese culture wholeheartedly. During the time of both the New Year on January, first and the Lunar Calendar New Year in Japan, residents and tourists alike will find the year’s zodiac celebrated throughout Japan, as well as New Year’s cards called, “nengajo” inherent in the Japanese day to day life and culture. The identification in the title, “water” in this sense comes from Cultural Celestial stems which was to determine the day, month, year, time, and even directions related to every child’s birth.
People born in the Rabbit year are said to have “rabbit virtues.” In terms of personality, they are said to be elegant, calm, responsible, and kind. Rabbits, having a patient nature, are also said to be associated with luck and creativity. While traveling throughout Japan this past New Year we found that various artists were creating some unique and unusual Rabbits to celebrate this special year. The rabbits in the set being offered represent six different rabbit, (Usagi) interpretations that are hand-crafted and collected by people throughout Japan. Here is a short identification of the pieces in this offer: There is a set of three wood rabbits: one hand-crafted in cedar and articulated that movement is controlled by a link chain that moves the tail and head; another rabbit is made of cedar wood with elongated ears and is made to wobble back and forth and does not turn over; a third is made of pine and seems to be eating with inner ears painted black and expressive eyes with eyelashes and perky nose. The next set represent pieces made of clay: One bunny is painted in a textured white enamel, sitting on a gold clump of clay with long ears (signed); another miniature rabbit has a gray glaze with elongated ears and red dot eyes; and a final piece made of pinched clay that has a very expressive face and ears/tail accented with gold leaf. All are exceptionally creative and perfectly represent this special 2023 Year of the Rabbit.
