There is currently not all that much known about the Japanese glass industry but vintage pieces from around the 1950s-1970s, the quality and style of which rival Murano, Scandinavian, and Stuban glass art production. Japanese design has been characterized throughout history by minimalist aesthetics, with a predilection for simplicity, elegance, lightness, and negative space. The use of organic elements, materials, and forms has also been favored in order to emphasize a spiritual connection with nature. With the advent of technology, Japanese glass artists have been at the forefront of many innovative designs.
The piece was purchased in the early 1990s at a well-known Kanazawa Art Shop called "Tsukibae" which identified this Chawan Tea Bowl as being made in 1991 and attributed to Japanese contemporary artist Yukito Nishinaka. This hand-blown glass vessel is used for the preparation of Matcha. The extraordinarily fluid natural material is the feature having a smooth lip and interior, with a textured exterior complimenting the entire experience. Its’ deep, cylindrically-shaped helps in the whisking process by providing ample room for the Chasen to move back and forth. The piece exhibits a stunning and pronounced combination of iridescent aurene to cobalt blue coloration with a swirled ribbed and textured cream patterned base with a foot reflecting the blue glass base of the bowl. The piece was either made specifically for display or to impress the guests at the chanoyu ceremony. The piece is unsigned.
Condition: Excellent condition. The piece is perfect without chips or cracks and as originally created.
