Vintage Sosaku Kokeshi

Creative Kokeshi "Mailers"

Unknown Artist

Age:1950-1960

Descriptive qualities:

These lathe-turn miniatures were made in the thousands and look like an ordinary Kokeshi doll. They are made from a single piece of hollowed out wood, and contain a personal note that is accessible after unscrewing the bottom. All subjects were depicted on the body to represent the prefecture from which they came. Each had mailing tags with a stamp that were tied around each neck and deposited at the postal station.

Origin:

This type of Kokeshi mailer was once a very popular item and a fun way to roll and mail a letter, instead of using, a yet to be developed postcard, and were collected by children throughout Japan shortly after WWII.
