Japanese Ceramic Hagi yaki Sake Flask by Tsukasa Kaneko
Age:1996
Descriptive qualities& condition:
Dimensions: 2-3/4”h x 6-0”dia.
Offered is this RARE Hagi Yaki Sake Flask with posture and color exceptionally beautiful, and an early piece of Tsukasa-san. The shaping was done with a potter's wheel in combination with hand formation. The clay used as with all Hagi ware is coarse, and due to its texture and color is unique among pottery creations. The piece incorporates the characteristic features of Hagi-yaki exhibiting a soft texture and the fine unglazed Kan-nyu patterns caused by the raw material clay and glaze. The white glaze is said to be imported from Korea which is a straw-based ash glaze that turns white when fired and as seen in this piece takes on a fluffy and thick textural appearance that becomes part of the fine texture and changes with time. This phenomenon is called "Hagi no nanabake"(various changes).
This characteristic is highly appreciated by sake enthusiasts throughout Japan. The pouring spout is beautifully fashioned to support the serving of chilled sake. The foot is unglazed, and circular and celebrates the vessel by raising it up from the table surface. The crudely woven reed handle gives a wonderful contrast in textures. This formal serving Flask was made specifically for use after the Kaiseki or kaiseki-ryōri which is a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner. The piece is unsigned, without a presentation box, and purchased from a major Hagi collective, whose prime focus is on locally crafted Hagi ware.
Condition: Excellent unused vintage condition. Pottery craftsmen of Hagi are considered among the very best in the country for their vision and ability to bring this aesthetic ideal to life.
