Offered is a vintage Japanese Setomono, (Seto-yaki) of Daruma in a pinching method of handmade ornamental pottery. Because of this methodical pinching process, it has wonderful character beginning with the foundation of the figure being formed from a lob of clay, then pinched to show detailed and deep folds of his robe and cowl adding an expressive quality to this figure. Secondly is the skillful and selective use of the gentle transparent and glossy yellow crackle glaze. And thirdly, the execution of the expressive face with a slight indication of dangling ear loops, a high relief beard, his famous “crane” inspired eyebrows, and bulging pierced white eyes give great character and life to this interpretation. Daruma figures have continued to be used and cherished as a symbol of good luck and a symbol of the importance of meditation. The piece is inscribed on the bottom of the figure by the maker, attributed to Kato, Sakusuke, and comes with its original cherry wood stand.
Beautifully incorporated is the Buddhist teaching expressed in this figure through a, “wabi-sabi” approach, which is a worldview centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. This clay pinch figure was air dried adds to the appreciation of beauty through “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete” in nature.
Condition: Excellent and beautifully cared for, with no breaks no repairs, or missing pieces, and an original finish.
