Daruma dolls are used and cherished as a symbol of good luck and future fortune noted in the script on the front of his robe. This particular figure is so much fun with a “jolly” expressive face as he peers out from his “white” outlined robe (white emphasizes learning and knowledge in Buddhism and is said to cut the delusion of ignorance turning into the wisdom of reality). Here we see his opened eyes outlined in white and black pupils topped with heavy eyebrows that are said to be shaped like the outline of the Japanese crane and represent longevity. After the turning and carving the figure was finished with a type of natural candle wax,(Rosoku no ro). The name of the piece with the artist's beautiful hand script signature is on the back of the figure.
Condition: Generally excellent vintage condition, commensurate with age and retaining the original craft/workmanship and natural features of the wood from which is it made.
