The only difference is that the last animal is the Boar in Japan, but the Pig in China. The Japanese zodiac is based on the solar calendar since the lunar calendar and was abandoned in 1872.

The Japanese zodiac, (Juunishi), is divided into 12 blocks with each block containing a group of years. In Japan, the adoption of the twelve-year cycle, with a different animal representing each block, is fairly common. Those individuals born during a particular year were said to inherit some of the personalities of that year's animal. Here is the year and summary of the characteristics of each animal. The zodiac animals are as follows: Rat (nezumi); Ox (ushi); Tiger (tora); Rabbit (usagi); Dragon (tatsu); Snake (hebi); Horse (uma); Sheep (hitsuji); Monkey (saru); Rooster (tori); Dog (inu) and the Boar (inoshishi)
