“Kuroasa | Starburst” Secret Trick Puzzle Box

This Yosegi-zaiku’, literally ‘wooden mosaic craft puzzle box, is based on a tradition that dates back to the Edo period (1603–1868), in which secret boxes were made with different types, textures and colors of wood to create unique, outstanding patterns. Offered is a wonderful Hakone Mosaic box design is referred to as "Kuroasa", (starburst pattern made from shades of red camphor, mulberry and black persimmon wood, with fine white wood lines separating each mosaic design). It has a hand etched 2-D drawing on one side, and an interesting cutout, (chalice or two people facing each other, executed in two colors. 

Vintage Condition: Excellent, “as is” with minimal effects of aging that does not affect the design, and retains the original craft/workmanship. Any discoloration, chipping/cracking, surface wear or structural damage noted. 

NOTEThe Hakone mountain chain has a huge variety of wood and is the only place in Japan producing the famous Japanese wooden mosaic art work, which were officially designated as a traditional craft in 1984 by the Japanese Minister of International Trade and Industry. 

The Hakone-Odawara area has always had a rich nature with abundant wooden materials. The mountains here are one of the very few places in Japan with such a wide variety of different sorts all together. Most works today are crafted with materials specially selected from “The Hakone Sanctuary”, which holds a high number of perfectly colored trees.
