ROKUSHO Vol.36 Sophisticated Smoking Paraphernalia | Collection of Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum
Age:2008 (Publication Date)
It is said that the custom of smoking came to Japan with the so-called “southern barbarians” (Portuguese) in the late 16th century. Once arriving at Nagasaki, smoking became popular in Kyoto without passing through local cities in between. Tobacco began to be cultivate pipes and paraphernalia. Pipe cases for carrying pipes or pouches for tobacco, luxuriously decorated and worthy of aesthetic regard, became an essential part of Japanese life. The volumes of this magazine were explicitly used by antique dealers as a resource guide on the subjects covered.
This rare and unusual softbound magazine gives a complete overview of “sage mono” and the superior pieces given birth through the ages by the guiding hands of master craftsmen from the late Edo through the Showa periods.
