Takarabukuro (Treasure Bag): A Netsuke Artist Book by Mitsuhiro
Age:2001 (Publication Date)
Raymond Bushell, a passionate netsuke collector, had a photocopy made of the original Takarabukuro (Treasure Bag), a notebook kept by the netsuke artist, Mitsuhiro Ohara (1810-1875), and carefully preserved by his family. In it, Mitsuhiro set down brief descriptions of the netsuke he had made or was in the process of carving. The artist wrote in sosho, a cursive script from Japanese handwriting, best described as a 'running script, ' and extremely difficult to read. Misao Mikoshiba undertook the laborious task of doing a translation, and the endeavor was made especially difficult because of Mitsuhiro's handwriting. She produced a remarkable document, which is a guide to one artist's creative world. This book is published in both English and Japanese.
The book is bound with Stab Binding (or Japanese Binding). In Japan, these bindings have been used for centuries. Stab bindings as with this book were used to bind folded sheets into a book. This type of binding does not allow the pages to lay flat when opened in the middle. This particular binding pattern is referred to as a 4-hole binding in which the string, in this case, is orange to match the cloth cover and is interlaced to both hold and give a decorative element to the surface appearance.
Condition: Excellent unused condition for the piece is a perfect Hardcover book with custom Slab binding, clean, unmarked, and bright.
