The Frank Lloyd Wright Collect of Surimono Surimono by Joan B. Mirviss and John T. Carpenter

$75.00

Surimono are deluxe Japanese woodblock prints issued in very limited editions. Produced for special occasions, most surimono were commissioned by poetry clubs and inscribed in flowing calligraphy with whimsical, witty, or humorous poems composed by members. The images played off the poems, making clever use of parody, historical allusion, and ingenious rebuses. Surimono were collected by the Japanese and, from the mid-nineteenth century, avidly sought by Westerners as well.

The collection reveals Wright as a connoisseur of the first rank, and this volume, at last, presents his rare and beautiful prints to the public in the deluxe format they deserve. This book was published in conjunction with an exhibition of Wright’s Surimono and other Japanese art objects mounted by the Phoenix Art Museum and later displayed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The author, Joan Misviss is an expert on Japanese painting and prints, and Surimono in particular. She has written and lectured widely on the subject and curated an exhibition of the finest prints of this genre in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
