Vintage Chinese Glazed Scholar’s Calligraphy Water dropper, (Shuǐdī guǎn) in the Shape of a Three-Legged Toad

We are told throughout history of a Chinese legend involving a wandering wise man called Liu Hai and his three-legged toad companion Ch’an Chu. The toad knows the secret of eternal life and for his friendship reveals the secret to the wise man.
Offered is a plucky little toad with beautifully defined and glazed body in colors of red to accentuate his scales, and blue to define his facial features with big buggy eyes and an expression on his face only a mother could love. Being a water dropper he has openings on his back to fill the container and two small openings on both side of his mouth for the water to be slowly dropped onto a surface. When you turn him over he has three legs positioned to jump at a minutes notice. Being from the 19th century he is unsigned but distinctively Chinese in origin.
