Vintage Japanese AJIRO Bamboo Letter Box with Lid

Age:Early Showa period (1920s-1940's)

Descriptive qualities& condition:

Dimensions: 12-1/2”l x 9-1/4”w x 3-0”h

Handmade box made from Japanese split bamboo with nice detailing of the edge of the lid, (minimal loss of color on the decorative trim). Stitch pattern of this box is called, "Yo-tsu-me-ami". It is the most basic stitch pattern. The piece has retained a beautiful reddish brown patine with warm tones and dark contrasts.

Vintage Condition: Excellent, original condition with no splitting, cracking or loss of material. “As is”, and retains the original craft/workmanship. Any discoloration, surface wear, or structural damage is noted.

Note: In the early Showa era, bamboo art wasn't valued as much as ceramics and lacquerware, so artisans worked harder to produce more decorative and artistic pieces.
