Many religious Okimono and containers such as this take the shape of various aspects of Japanese traditions and Shinto faith. One of the most prominent examples is this Daruma doll in the effigy of Bodhidharma (Daruma) a monk who began the Zen school of Buddhism and famously meditated for seven years until his arms and legs atrophied. Here he takes the form of a red cloaked doll, which has a small hollowed out compartment hidden within to hold incense. If only this tasteful Kogo could tell of the gatherings it quietly witnessed. The 19th century artisan who created this piece did a masterful job of artistic and expressive hand painting of the face, detailed “crane” eyebrows and hair surrounding his face, and bold coloration accurately depicting this famous character. A very charming piece.
