Vintage Japanese Hanhaba Obi | Geometric Silk and Brocade Obi

Descriptive qualities& condition:
Dimensions: 6-0”w x 134”l
Shown is a casual Hanhaba Obi, literally means half-width obi. An Obi best is a finishing element to a traditional Kimono, a signature, a fashion statement and a focal point and can give a different impression when worn for different purposes. This narrow decorative belt is wrapped around the body when wearing a kimono and makes it more comfortable and easy to wrap around the waist.
This particular obi incorporates brocade in a floral/geometric design which is reversible for the design is on both sides as well as the floral family crest (Mon) within an overall hexagon Kikko shape (which began its popularity in courtly society before it was adopted as a Mon in its own right). It is a heavier fabric as are most silk embroidered pieces. It has a wonderful range of colors from orange, tea green, black and gold and is semi-casual. The entire weaving was completed from one edge of the Obi to the other, and has but one side seam, meaning that the Obi was woven in one continuous panel before being folded over in such a way that the pattern was not lost in the fold.
There are so few really fine obi available today because there are few Master Weavers left today in Japan. In Japan, Obi are passed down as family heirlooms from generation to generation and are considered part of the wealth of the family.
Condition: Excellent, for the piece is perfect; rich tones with no color fading or imperfections, and the strength of the warp and weft is as originally made. It meets the high standards of Japanese textile design.
