An early 20th Century large Japanese wood and lacquer lidded and deep container for serving fish or rice. There are several layers of different colors of red lacquer and black over wood, which heightens the fluid appearance of the design. Finely hand carved in the shape of a red sea bream and using the Kamakura lacquer technique. The shape of the sea bream and the roundness of the tray is realistically represented by the carver who shows a great deal of attention to the distinctive face. The scales and fin are beautifully detailed in red lacquer and employs the hiramaki-e, (low relief carving), on red and black lacquer ground. The tail and fin serve a dual purpose as decorative handles.
Condition: This perfectly preserved lacquered fish box is in excellent condition with no cracks, no chips, no broken fins or tail. Beautiful patination throughout.
