Offered is a free form Ikebana/plant container cut and hollowed from a natural wavy “quilted” pattern or figure, often similar to ripples on water in Yakusugi, (Cedar) root and in the shape of a geta, (A Japanese traditional sandal having a flat wooden base and useful in the snow and rain). The piece has an inward lip and steam bent Take, (bamboo) handle mounted on a thick flat base. The vessel has a tight grain exterior and retains it beautiful wood patinated surface. It was specifically made to support floral compositions and plants.
This type of container is both used in home to accommodate daily flower arrangements and during the tea ceremony to help set the mood, and to bring out the inner qualities of flowers and live plants and materials in an expressive display. Skilled artisans transform these natural wonders into functional and unique works of art. The piece was submitted in a competition according to the details on the bottom and is signed by the carver.
