Vintage Japanese Porcelain Daruma Stoneware Suiteki (Bodhidharma)
Age:Edo period, early 19th century
Descriptive qualities& condition:
Dimensions: 3-1/2”h x 3-0”w x 2-1/2”d
This old and exquisite porcelain water dropper, (Suiteik) is inspired by Daruma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism, and is decorated with salmon (red iron glaze) stoneware and has a distorted face left to the imagination of the user. His contrasting light color face stares out from under his traditional garment with a cowl, (monk’s hood) that is draped and has soft folds which fall around the face and neckline. There are two openings one allowing air to fill and facilitating pouring from the second opening on the side of his cowl.
This is a perfect example of “wabi-sabi” in that the dropper exemplifies transience and imperfection, (imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete). The piece is unsigned with no kiln mark.
Condition: Excellent Vintage condition and commensurate with age, and natural features from the kiln. An expressive representation of this notable religious figure.
