The two beautiful and simple blackish brown mottled semi-transprent hair combs are made of tortoiseshell (Bekko), and played an important role as a decorative material for people of diverse social status and had become widespread as a daily necessity in lives of ordinary people, and particularly the Geisha, at the time. Some 400 years ago, Japan took a treasured material and created these unornamented simple combs transforming them into an elegant beauty accessory that became a work of art by simply exemplifying it natural color and swirling design. At that time, as the turtle was considered a lucky sign as a sign of longevity with the crane, hairpins and combs were treasured by all levels of society and particularly by the Geisha. Both of the combs offered are thin and delicate and have arched tops folding into the side of each piece.
