Wakasa Lacquerware in Fukui Prefecture has a 400-year history and is known throughout the country, with the most famous being the Wakasa-nuri artifacts from the City of Obama. This particular box has a beautiful surfacing technique depicting Marine elements using eggshell, mother-of-pearl, shell, and gold leaf ‘hiramaki-e’ on a pure black lacquer background highlighting an intentionally scattered fashion and providing beautiful visually striking gemstone-like glitter. There are three motifs that are off-centered that resemble jellyfish creating a striking piece with fine quality in both artistic design concept and craftsmanship. The lid, which is where the colorful design is focused has an “ogee” carving of the sides of the lid giving relief to the rectangular box. Wakasa-nuri lacquer pieces are beautiful to the eye and supportive for the storage of valuable small objects. Being almost exclusively handmade, no two objects are ever the same.
Condition: Excellent original condition with no separating corners, dings, or chips.
