This RARE Japanese Lacquer Lidded Document box exhibits an exceptionally wonderful texture and bold design detailing through intricate high-relief carving (Takamakie) on a base of Ginko Wood. The motif represents a Peony, (the Queen of flowers), about to open, surrounded by leaves. The Peony and its color play an essential role in representing aspects of society and represent bravery, honor, love, and prosperity.

The most unique feature of this Document Box is its base design of deep scarlet pigment on an interesting overall layout. That is a slash, similar to a solid black lightning bolt, that runs across one-quarter of the surface of the lid. The balance of the surface celebrates the Peony and is associated with formality and authority, as opposed to brighter intensities of color which typically symbolize joy and playfulness. This Peony is intricately carved in high relief, (Takamakie). The base of the lid design and sides and corners are curved with their surfaces in low relief, (Tiramakie), featuring chisel markings left intentionally to accentuate overall patterned areas. The interior of the box is high gloss black lacquer.

Boxes of this quality and detailing are rare and hard to find, particularly with this contemporary interpretation of the motif. “Mingei” lacquered handcrafted items are rarely signed by the artist or craftsperson.
