Japanese Sasano-bori Rooster Wood carving - Onagadori Rooster Yonezawa City
Dimensions: 9-1/2” h x 2-3/4”w
This charming carving of an Onagadori rooster is an example of the Japanese folk art Sasano-bori. A technique that originated in the Yonezawa Prefecture. The piece is carved from a single block of wood. Even the elaborate feather details of curled shavings are carved from the same block. They were not shaped separately and attached to the piece. The jaunty rooster seems to be king of his farm-yard world as he perches atop the slender post flaunting his red prominent red crest called a comb, located on the top if his head complimented by a charming and realistic face. Below the beak are red lobes of skin called wattles. Shown are big black eyes. The simply, rustic quality of the carving in the rooster’s body contrasts with the delicate filigree of the extravagant curling feathers and tail.
Condition: Excellent original condition without chips or dings. Exceptional Carving.
