Japanese Vintage Lacquered Chestnut Toggle | Amulet

Dimensions: 3-0”l

Offered is a pair of lacquered chestnuts (Kuri), one larger (representing men), one smaller representing women) in traditional society, and carried on the body similar to a netsuke having a symbolic meaning, particularly to men. During the Sengoku Jidai, soldiers were often given dried chestnuts (Kachiguri) from a loved one when they were separated by warring factions throughout history.

The image is a reminder of the autumn when roasted chestnuts were shared and eaten for which chestnut jellied desert was particularly cherished throughout Japan. Chestnuts symbolized strength which was a departing wish by the family. They are associated with good fortune and a wish for a healthy return, particularly by younger couples. These chestnuts are strung on a heavy silver masculine chain to be worn on an outer garment.

Condition: Excellent as handcrafted and functions as intended and being vintage retains its wonderful presence.
