Vintage Japanese RARE Daruma (Bodhidharma) Container with Six miniature Daruma Toys by Mito Hiroshi

Mito Hiroshi (水戸 寛) was a renowned Japanese Kokeshi artist known particularly miniature versions in Ejiko containers as well as his interpretation of Daruma style colorful  as well as beautifully painted forms. Mito-san was born in 1933 and passed away in 2019. He studied under Master Kokeshi artist Tendo, Mamagata.

Offered is a rare and exceptional Daruma container for which many religious Okimono, Toys and figures such as this which take the shape of various aspects of Japanese traditions and the Shinto faith. One of the most prominent examples is this Daruma container in the effigy of Bodhidharma (Daruma), a monk who began the Zen school of Buddhism. Daruma dolls such as this carving are used and cherished as a symbol of good luck and future fortune noted in the script on the front of his robe. Seen is his open stern and expressive eyes peer out and topped with heavy eyebrows that are said to be shaped like the outline of the Japanese crane and represent longevity. His downturned mouth is emphasized with touches of red and his wide nose nostrils are predominant on his hairy face. The top of his head lifts to give access to the container and the six miniature Daruma toys within. After the turning and carving the cherry wood figure was finished with a type of natural candle wax,(Rosoku no ro). The piece has the title and artist's beautiful calligraphic signature on the bottom.

Condition: Original excellent undamaged condition exhibiting an aged patination and meticulous care with minimal imperfections related to daily use. “The object has not been restored and retains the original craftsmanship and no fading or age deterioration.
