Vintage Japanese Sosaku Kokeshi entitled: Doji (Child) by Yajima, Suijo

Offered is a rare, unusual form and very unique, bulbous-shaped Kokeshi. We believe was created by Yajima, Suijo only because the signature is pictorially rendered and not in typical Kanji. This doll's distinguishing features are its beautifully sumi-e’ painted hair in black, bangs, and side hair fringes. The artist incorporated a Mage on the top of the head. The face has a small slashed and tiny red nose. Beyond these minimal carved details except for a small notch at the neck indicate the closure of the garment. the piece is made from Birch, (Kabanoki), wood is void of decoration, emphasizing the three-piece body, head, bodice, and center portion, and raised base. The lower center portion has grass reeds randomly spaced on the front of the doll. The piece has its name and is signed by the artist on the bottom of the figure.  

Condition: Excellent condition means that the piece has no fading, cracks, or repairs and is in original condition and consistent with the age and standards of collectible Kokeshi Folk Art.
