Artisan | Woodworker: Fujikaewa, Masao | 1942-2015
Biographical History:
The only record information is that Fujikaewa-san was born in Gunma prefecture and began creating Kokeshi dolls at the age of seventeen, (1959) under sensei Ishida Kanji, (first member of the Board of Trustees of “The All Gunma Cooperative Association”). Masao opened the Fujikaewa Craft Corporation in 1991 and won numerous awards including the prestigious Prime Minister Award twice in 1996 and 2002. Two family members, Fujikaewa Kazumi and Fujikaewa Eiichi took over his Kokeshi-making business after his death. Beyond this information, there is little information. Still, as researchers and collectors, we felt it was most important to present all notable Sosaku Kokeshi artists, particularly the early masters who established a characteristic form and decorative treatment associated with their dolls.
Collector's note – descriptive qualities, standard characteristics & ornamentation styles:
Being one of the early Sosaku Vintage Sosaku Kokeshi craftsmen he emphasized wonderful drawings and colorations. The majority of his later dolls have black ‘bobbed” hairstyles, short round and plump bodies, strong bold colors, and each wearing the traditional Michiyuki, (short coat worn over a kimono) featuring seasonal flowers which were his main interest. All of the renditions of his faces represent young girls with simple slanting eyes. From information from the All Gunma Kindai Kokeshi Association, the top image in this collection was one of the first Kokeshi made by Fujikaewa-san when he began creating Kokeshi which bears his signature shown on this master page.
