Contemporary Japanese Koma Spinning Tops
We are not accepting orders from December 8 - Jan 1, 2025. Sorry for the inconvenience. We will resume sales on Jan 1st.
Dimensions: 2-0”h x 1-3/4”-2-0” dia.
Offered is a set of three classic finger-spinning tops, (koma) each having unusual forms in keeping with the squat shape of this compact form to keep the top spinning smoothly. Tops of this type are made by professional woodcarvers called Kijishokunin. The body of the top is made from the end grain of maple, which is one of four hardwoods and beautifully painted in either strips or flowers, (in this case purple). Each top has decorative crowns to twirl the top and activate spinning and give a better grip; the bodies of each are beautifully carved in horizontal multi-colored strips—the tip or point where the top spins and balances are on the very bottom. Each varies slightly in size but is in a small category.
Condition: Excellent, meaning that the piece retains its original craft/workmanship and shows a wonderful, developed patina commensurate with its vintage. This suggests a degree of wear that corresponds to its vintage. Each top is void of damage, cracks, breakage, or repairs.
