Contemporary Japanese Tenmoku Guinomi Stoneware

This Tenmoku Sake Cup is a type called Sato ware known for its diverse styles, techniques, and glazes. The pottery is made using wheel-thrown or hand-built methods, and the clay is often rich in iron, which gives the finished pieces a warm reddish-brown color, and in this case, accented with a mustard glaze that is feathered as it dripped down the sides of the cup. It has a low-rise circular foot. the piece is made for drinking cold sake. The piece is unsigned.
Seto Ware originated in the Seto region of Japan, located in Aichi Prefecture. Its history can be traced back to the 12th century. Seto was one of the six ancient kilns of Japan and was known for its abundant clay deposits, which made it an ideal location for pottery production. Chinese and Korean ceramics greatly influenced the production of Seto Ware, and it became one of the first pottery traditions in Japan to adopt glaze techniques from these regions.
