There are certain animals that hold a very special place in Japanese culture, and this can bee seen through their inclusion in folklore and traditional sculptures. “Sinkogei” a woodblock studio that is located in Hida Takayama’s old town, the northern region of Gifu creates these wonderful stuffed textile animals such as this Tiger. They are known for hand-dyed stuffed animals with wood-cut by their method.

Woodblock prints such as this Tiger reflect nature and culture in Hide Takayama. The Eco (Chinese Zodiac signs) series began after stuffed horses in Takayama, for which many other animal forms followed. Tiger children were born in 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950, 1938, 1926, 1914. People born in the year of the Tiger are sensitive, stubborn, short-tempered, courageous, selfish and slightly mean ... yet they are deep thinkers and are capable of great sympathy for those they are close to and love.
