Rare Vintage Japanese Daruma with Baby by Hideyuki Sato
Dimension: 2-1/2”h x 1-3/4”dia
This RERE Daruma toy was made with a purpose to communicate the necessary of protecting children and has long been believed to sard off evil and carries the belief that Daruma can help parents dreams to come true in having a healthy and happy child. As part of this design is the typical red with Daruma showing a stern face with large eyebrows, large determined eyes and expressive nose surrounded by facial hair. As with all Daruma figures he has no arms, as a reminder of Bodhidharma losing his limbs in his quest to reach enlightenment through self-sacrifice. As with the traditional Daruma figures he is always painted in red, a color that represents the supernatural with kanji writing wishing good luck.
The bay is a type of Isume sleeping baby which moves freely as if in a as it is seated into the top of Daruma’s head just and similar to babies who were placed in a basket to play throughout the day while the parents worked in the fields. The baby has a sweet child like face with hair fringes a smile and cat type nose. Its hair is black in the style of the Yajirou-kei family of dolls with a bun on their heads, similarly painted with a red center spot. The piece is made of dogwood and signed on the bottom by the artist.
