Vintage Japanese Sosaku Kokeshi entitled: “Uchiki | Shyness” by Shouzan, Shido

Sold

Dimension:  9-1/4”h

This RARE doll has a common design element: a repetitive textural pattern called ‘Harmonic Chatter work’. It is a random decoration enabling the artist to produce some exquisite, yet unique surface treatment, and to represent the kimono and the natural qualities of the wood. Additionally, the common ‘Bob’ hair treatment is seen with one exception, the ‘Mage’ on the top of two of their heads.

As this doll is an interpretation of a young girl, it is said the Japanese culture is one of modesty and humility. We are told that the Japanese people regulate their behavior and response by reading faces and the eyes of others. Here, as well as elsewhere, you will see many examples of different characteristics of the eye and expressions. The doll has the red impressed stamp of the artist.
