Born in Fukushima, Watanabe-san studied under Traditional Yajirou Master Sato, Tatsuo, of Miyagi Prefecture. Arguably, the most popular and prolific of the 20th/c Sosaku Kokeshi artists.

This beautiful, carved, and painted Kokeshi is wonderfully proportioned and expressive through deep carving to highlight details of the body, which are meant to emphasize the textural qualities of the wood.  The textile representation created by fabric makers called oriya inspired the Nishijin brocades, (Nishijin ori), that originated in the northwestern part of Kyoto, which fascinated the creators of art and painting throughout Japan. To see such a textile motif carved and painted on wood is extremely exceptional and quite a feat to replicate.

The colors of the deeply carved abstract flowers are red and dark purple, which are also seen on one side of the head of the doll. Together with the carved flower petal-like patterns that frame her face, the artist can enhance the piece with additional tactile sensations. She has informal bangs falling over the forehead, which is common for Watanabe-san, along with the expressive and modest treatment of the eyes. The piece is signed in script by the artist as well has having placed red Hanko on the bottom of the doll.

The piece was published in the 2022 publication of Sosaku Kokeshi: Celebrating the Major Artists of the Creative Movement. For more information on this artist go to the following link:https://mingeiarts.com/collections/artisan-woodworker-watanabe-masao-1917-2007.
