The technical ability to carve a doll from one piece of wood and still give character to the differing elements of the piece is beautifully rendered in this wonderful representation of a child. The most common feature is the use of ‘Rokuro moyo’ horizontally carved line work, which is incorporated into the body of this design. Of course, his favorite wood, Enju, features a natural color and wood grain. The face, with its distinctive eyes and red nose, carries the feeling of impishness. The hair treatment is has three-dimensional version of the ‘Bob’ hair treatment. There is a stamp on the bottom identifying the piece made by Yamanaka-san.

Born in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture Japan, and a graduate of the Textile Engineering School. He is a member of the Japan Kokeshi Crafts Association and an avid photographer.
