Vintage Sosaku Kokeshi entitled: “Kaku maki | Winter Shawl” by Yamanaka, Sanpei (1926-2012)Offered is a wonderful Kokeshi which we have not seen published to date and we expect you will not see another because of its rarity. Here, the compassionate face is imbued with a quality of peacefulness and is carved to look like it is a separate element with her shawl tucked around her head. Her black hair is represented traditionally, incorporating the ‘Mage’ hairstyle. She is wearing a common blanket wrap called a “Kakumaki”, which is a winter shawl used throughout the Northern part of Japan to put on quickly to keep the body warm. The black painting and feathering of the shawl at the top and bottom of the figure is meant to contrast nicely with the natural grain of the wood The piece has its characteristic red signature on the bottom of the doll.

Yamanaka-san received 20 awards for his Kokeshi including the prestigious “Prime Minister” award in 1979. The piece was published in Sosaku Kokeshi: Celebrating the Major Artists of the Creative Movement in 2022.
