Vintage Sosaku Kokeshi entitled “Uchiki | Shyness” by Shouzan, Shido (1932-1995)

Sold

Dimensions: 7-0”h

This expressive Kokeshi has an unidentifiable design element: a repetitive textural pattern called ‘Harmonic Chatter work’ is exceptional celebrating the natural qualities of the unpainted natural qualities of wood. It is a random decoration enabling the artist to produce some exquisite, yet unique surface treatment. Additionally, the common ‘Bob’ hair treatment is seen in this very cleanly rendered doll.  As with Shouzan’s interpretations of young girls, it is said that Japanese culture is one of modesty and humility. We are told that the Japanese people regulate their behavior and response by reading faces and the eyes of others. Here you see one of many examples of different characteristics of the eye and expressions with simple horizontal eyes and a two-dot rendered nose. The doll is signed by the artist.

Condition: This doll is in Mint condition, meaning that the piece retains its original craft/workmanship showing a wonderful-developed patina commensurate which suggests no degree of wearing that corresponds to its vintage. It is void of damage, cracks, breakage, or repairs and meets all the standards of the collectible Sosaku Kokeshi.
