Vintage Sosaku Kokeshi entitled: Winter Camellia, (Kantsubaji) by Sato, Koson (A.K.A. Komura)

Sold

Dimensions: 7-1/2”h

Sato’s dolls are easily recognized by wonderfully soft and gentle faces, with the bodies’ artwork ranging from simple but elegant sumi-e’ brush strokes to beautifully painted autumn leaves, camellia, (winter rose) in red, yellow and white, framed with dark green leaves. Her work distances itself from other female artists of the period in the creative genre with her bold and colorful approach. Here the head is slightly slanted with a warm and gentle facial expression and beautifully formed red mouth. To frame the face is the use of black bangs and wisps of hair falling beside the face. The piece is signed on the bottom by the artist.

Vintage Condition: Excellent, unrestored and completely intact and retains the original craft/workmanship. The piece meets all the standards of collectible Folk Art.

NOTE: One of the few female creative Kokeshi makers recognized as an accomplished artist, Kouson-san worked out of her studio in Fukushima-ken, Kuwaori-machi. This was in the heart of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami devastation area of Fukushima Prefecture. Sources tell us that the majority of her holdings were lost in this disaster.

As collectors, we felt it was most important to represent all Sosaku Kokeshi artists, and particularly a female and whether or not the artist has a written account of his or her life. Each shows the diversity of this cultural specialization and the creative work produced by this artist.
