Vintage Yajirou Traditional Kokeshi by Niiyama Fukuo

This is a prize-winning (acknowledgment scripted on the side), “Rattler” doll, which the most recognizable feature being its large head that is hollow and filled with rice, (gara iri), which creates a gentle sound when it is shaken. The top of the head shows red and purple rings with a green center spot on the top of the skull, with painted beret-like feature with side-hair fringes framing the face. The face is detailed with expressive one lid or double eyelids, cat nose and red lips. As common with this style of Kokeshi it has a distinctly narrow waistline and wider base. This Yajirou utilizes a veritable rainbow of colors, from the usual red, to purple, and blue, in a very unusual undulating form. The upper body has a hand-painted collar with horizontal stripes encircling the neck and body with simple brush stokes in green on the bodice. These Rokoru moyo style horizontal red stripes continue above and below the waist, terminating at the base with red vertical line work.  The doll is lathe-turned from one piece of Dogwood. The piece has the acknowledgement on the side in beautiful script and is signed on the bottom in script by the artist.

Condition: Very Good with some discoloration at the base of the doll from dampness but remains in beautiful condition affording the doll age-old elegance. Retains the original craft/workmanship showing a wonderfully-developed patina and commensurate with age and unrestored. The piece meets all the standards of Traditional Kokeshi collectibles.
