Throughout Japan, carpenters and woodworkers produced beautiful lacquerware pieces which included some of the most prized utilitarian and decorative objects such as dishes and serving pieces, carved and lacquer vases, incense and storage boxes with compartments, document and stationary boxes, and musical instruments. Most display an ingenious use combining beautifully carved wood with highly decorative and deep lacquered finishes.
