Dimensions: 5-1/4”h x 4-0” dia.

Shown is an antique Japanese painted clay figure of seated Daruma. It is from Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku region and painted with an unusually expressive and detailed depiction of Bodhidharma, the monk founder of Zen Buddhism. He has his traditionally intense expression, heavy eyebrows, and stylized mustache and, in this case, his red “cowled” robe is undecorated with the exception of deep gold-colored folds of the fabric. The entire figure is raised on a black base. There is a small impressed seal on the back that is unidentified.

Condition: Very good condition with a slight indication of wear from use.
