Hard-carved wood has been an important element throughout Japan because of the abundance of wood, born out of strong cultural tradition and folklore.Wood and bamboo were used for making such objects as furniture and furnishings, architectural details, clothing racks, dressing mirrors, all forms of boxes, serving trays, pull toys, and sculptural forms such as Sasano-bori and zodiac figures. Most were left in its natural state or lacquered and decorated with historic motif.
